Sky Katz showed us her rapping skills on America’s Got Talent and now she’s showing us her acting skills on Disney’s Raven’s Home! AND don’t forget to see her performance at Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day on August 26th!
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about Raven’s Home and your character Tess?
Sky Katz: My character Tess, she’s crazy, while maintaining her cool. So, yeah she’s crazy, but cool.
upfrontNY: Is she anything like you in real life?
Sky Katz: She is, she’s not really scared of anything. She’s kind of fearless, but don’t mess with her because- just don’t.
upfrontNY: Have you ever seen That’s So Raven before getting the part?
Sky Katz: I actually have. I have older siblings and all of them and their friends grew up with it, watching it. And even if I didn’t like it, which I loved it, they would kind of force me to watch it, but I loved it which was a good thing.
upfrontNY: So, how is That’s So Raven different and similar to Raven’s Home?
Sky Katz: Well, Raven and Chelsea are parents and it’s a big responsibility for them. So, they kind of have to mature up a little bit and they’re not kids anymore.
upfrontNY: What is it like working with Disney veterans like Raven Symone and Anneliese van der Pol?
Sky Katz: It’s crazy. It’s a dream come true, literally. They teach me so much that I would never know about acting.
upfrontNY: You were on America’s Got Talent for your rapping and freestyling skills, how did you discover that talent?
Sky Katz: My parents grew up in Queens so I’ve always listened to rap music. Then at like parties when songs came on that I know I would just start rapping and people would tell my parents you need to get her a manager and agents and we did. I didn’t even tell my parents I auditioned for America’s Got Talent I just did it because I would send audition tapes out in Jordan’s, high top socks, and a hat. I auditioned for it while my mom was cleaning around the house and organizing stuff. I auditioned for it and they called back my dad and he was like “What she didn’t even tell me! Are you sure? This has to be a prank.” And it wasn’t a prank and there you go.
upfrontNY: Have you always wanted to act or did that come along with getting into music?
Sky Katz: I’ve always wanted to act, but I never really pursued it or like told anybody so once I was doing music more and meeting all these people I said I want to act. I auditioned for a few other shows and the first thing I got was Raven’s Home.
upfrontNY: You will be performing at Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day, is there anything in particular you are looking forward to about that performance?
Sky Katz: Yeah, I’m looking forward to being a part of it because it’s August 26th with tennis games, live performances and other fun activities and events and I’m so happy to be a part of all of that.
upfrontNY: You are a New York Native, what do you miss the most about NY when filming in LA or performing somewhere else?
Sky Katz: The city, the vibe, the people everybody from the studio in the Bronx. I miss a lot about it. There’s a bunch of things you don’t have in L.A. that’s only in New York.
upfrontNY: What do you like to do for fun besides performing?
Sky Katz: I love to play basketball. I’m a big baller. I guess if I have nothing to do or if I do have something to do I always try to fit it in. That’s another thing I want to do when I’m older, be a basketball player.
