Julian Acosta is a talented actor who can currently be seen on Amazon’s “Hand of God.” Season one has 10 episodes that have been released on Amazon Prime. Julian was also introduced on this season’s BET series “Being Mary Jane” where he pursued Kara, becoming her love interest.
This fall he can be seen on Season two of “Madam Secretary.”
We recently got the chance to speak with Julian about “Hand of God“, “Being Mary Jane,” and what is next for him!
upfrontNY: You are a part of Amazon’s “Hand of God” can you tell us about your role on the show?
Julian Acosta: I play Guy Guillet. He is a representative of Brooks Innovations as we are developing our headquarters. He is making sure he represents Brooks Innovations best interest which aren’t always necessarily the same as Mayor Bobo or Pernell Harris’.
upfrontNY: What is the best part of being on this show?
Julian Acosta: For me, the writing is number one. It is the primary reason why I love this show. The creater, Ben Waktins and the rest of the staff have done a great job in running with the world that Ben has created. I remember the pilot and being completely overwhelmed by the excitement of the idea of being in this show.
upfrontNY: You are also a part of “Being Mary Jane”where your character, Gael knows what he wants and how to go after it, which happens to be Kara. What do you think it is about her that intrigues him?
Julian Acosta: Not only her incredible beauty, but I think what gets his brain moving is a sense of curiosity why this woman seems to be riddled with some self doubt. It is attractive and challenging to him. He won’t let her get away with much. The biggest driving thing for him is that he is looking for an honest relationship. He makes her content with herself as the series unfolds. It shows someone making you confront some of the things you don’t necessarily want to confront.
upfrontNY: Do you feel like you connect with the character, in having that drive and going after what you want?
Julian Acosta: I do, especially with getting to a place in your life where you understand how the world works and you become a lot less willing to waste any time on things that don’t really matter, aren’t that important, and at the end of the day don’t bring or add anything to the bottom life equation.
upfrontNY: “Hand of God” is on Amazon Prime, and “Being Mary Jane” is on Netflix. Have you had any good binge watching lately?
Julian Acosta: Yes, I have. “Peaky Blinders” on Netflix. It is post world war 1 and follows the Shelby family. It is amazingly shot, brilliantly acted, incredibly written, and beautifully filmed. It is one of the best television series I have ever seen.
On Amazon I have been binging on “New York”, Ric Burn’s documentary about New York City.
upfrontNY: I read that you split your time between New York, LA, and the Florida Keys. When you are in New York, what do you like to do?
Julian Acosta:I like to go to the museums. I have been spending a lot of time down in Brooklyn on the Waterfront near Dumbo and Bridge Park.
upfrontNY: I saw you have financed a yearly scholarship in Puerto Rico. What has this been like?
Julian Acosta: Humbling on so many different levels having the opportunity to do something that for so long has made you feel powerless, in Puerto Rico. It has allowed me to affect a change in someone’s life like education allowed a change in my life.
My grandmother was a teacher in the same school for many years and taught many people in that small rural town where these scholarships go to. I’m extremely fortunate to be able to do that.
upfrontNY:You have followed your dreams, helped others do the same with a college education. What other goals do you want to achieve?
Julian Acosta: One goal is to run a television series I have created that I am actively working on. Another goal that I have is a long term plan with my wife for us to take a couple years and navigate the world on a sailboat. Those are 2 of many goals.
