Courtney Cole is a singer-songwriter who recently released her new single “Spiritual”. Check out our interview and the video for her new song below!
upfrontNY: When did you find your passion for music?
Courtney Cole: Before I could even walk. I used to love matching pitches with the vacuum cleaner and singing really loud in my car seat. When I was 5, I had my first performance and once people clapped for me, I was hooked!
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about your new single “Spiritual”?
Courtney Cole: Spiritual came about during a really rough time for me. I was living in Nashville, and a lot of things came to a screeching halt for me there. So I decided to change things up a bit and move to Los Angeles.. where I started to come alive again. I fell in love with the ocean and saw a strong correlation between my fears of it and my fears of moving forward with my career. So I bought a paddle board and have been working on conquering the ocean, which has give me the courage to release this song. Spiritual is a direct reflection of the spiritual change that happened within me. I kept the track super stripped down and simple because I feel like that’s what my life has become over the last year.
upfrontNY: How does the ocean make you feel and what do you love most about it?
Courtney Cole: The ocean makes me feel alive. It makes me feel challenged, and it makes me respect the divinity of something so much bigger than me. I think what I love the most is the challenge the presents me. Every time I paddle out, I feel fear of the unknown, and it’s a great reminder to relax and paddle through it… in every aspect of life because on the other side of fear is so much beauty.
upfrontNY: What advice do you have for others going through a transition in their life?
Courtney Cole: To trust yourself and the powers that are beyond you. To embrace the journey, even when it’s scary because that’s when you really discover who you are.
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about The Rockumentary?
Courtney Cole: The Rockumentary is a docuseries I filmed, edited, and wrote the music for. It came about after I experienced a lot of hard change in Nashville. I wanted to tell a story and share the music I had been writing in the midst of the change. I knew that I couldn’t be the only one facing these feelings no matter what the situations looks like. It was really important to me to be vulnerable and connect with people in an age where social media makes life seem perfect. I’ll be the first to tell you, it’s not.
upfrontNY: How did your life change moving from Nashville to L.A.?
Courtney Cole: It became a lot more simple. I truly started to discover what it meant to be “successful.” And that success looks a lot different than what I thought it was. Success to me is to be happy and live a life that feels aligned with your true self. I started pulling out all of the negativity in my life and created boundaries of what I will and won’t allow. I knew that I couldn’t go about my life the way I was in Nashville, I was so burnt out. Moving to LA was like a reset for me, and truly taught me more about myself than anything else I’ve ever experienced.
upfrontNY: What was the best and worst part of your move?
Courtney Cole: The best part is living so close to the ocean and all it has taught me. The worst part is living by the ocean and never wanting to do anything else but BE on the ocean!! Haha!!
upfrontNY: How does it feel to have others watching this and supporting you in your adventures and your music?
Courtney Cole: At first, I gotta say, it felt scary to know that people are watching and I could fail in the public eye. But I quickly realized that’s not what it’s about. It’s about creating.. being HONEST.. and inspiring people. That’s all that matters to me. And the support has been truly incredible.
upfrontNY: What is your dream venue to perform?
Courtney Cole: It would be a dream to sell out the Superdome in my hometown of New Orleans 🙂
