In life, no matter what age, background, or walk of life you are from, one thing everyone strives for, is love. Love is that common force that drives men and women in a search to find their other half, their soul mate. We go through ups and downs, several interesting dating experiences, and dry spells where we think we will never have another date again. No matter what our situation is, you never know what can happen and it seems to be true what they say, “it will happen when you least expect it.”
Elena Murzello could not imagine going to the grocery store without a list and through that thought, she came up with the idea of having a list to find the right “one” and wrote the book “The Love List: A Guide to getting who you want.” This book is a great read and guide to helping you find who you are looking for, through stories, resources, and tips to making your own list. Throughout the book, Elena uses quotes, throws a great reference to a scene in the movie “Up in the Air” and shares a perfect comparison between online dating and “The Bachelorette.”
Elena connects with her readers by sharing an honest portrayal of her relationship experiences. This book motivates you to take a risk on love. Elena said that “things happen for a reason” and I instantly connected with this statement.
We recently had the chance to chat with Elena about her book.
upfrontNY: At the age of 21 you created a list of characteristics that you were looking for in a future partner. When you first wrote this list, did you have any idea that it would lead you to become a published author?
Elena: No, Not at all. You’re 21, in class, it’s a sunny day, you’re bored. It was me and my girlfriend .I said let’s write up a list. I didn’t think anything would happen with it. To see how it all evolved is great and I am so excited. You have no idea when you write lists, and put things out there what is actually going to happen.
upfrontNY: The list started out with 55 characteristics, how did it change over time?
Elena: I realized some things aren’t that important. Now that I’m older I realize that certain (physical) qualities a person would have don’t carry you through the hard times. That’s how my list sharpened. A lot of them had been physical characteristics.
upfrontNY: It is interesting to see how over time personality, mind and everything you want starts changing.
Elena: Absolutely I didn’t know how ambitious I was at 21 and now I feel it’s a great quality. I would like to see it in another person, that drive and work ethic. Someone who is going to carry you through, someone who compliments you.
upfrontNY: What is the most important characteristic on your list?
Elena: I want the person to love me. That’s really important. I didn’t think of it at 21 but now it has hit the number 1 on my list.
upfrontNY: You talked about “The One” and how people you have interviewed “just knew” they found the right one. Do you believe that people can know in an instant that they found the one they will marry?
Elena: I do. Maybe that’s the hopeless romantic in me, but my parents are celebrating their 40th anniversary this July. They got married after 3 months. I can see how they compliment each other very well. I see how my parents knew after 3 months that this was going to be their life forever. It’s incredible when you do.
upfrontNY: What has life been like since releasing this book?
Elena: It has been busy juggling work, the book, and hanging out with my friends. I travel a lot and doing different things, but I enjoy it. I feel like all this time I have been preparing for this and it’s exciting for all of this to happen. Having opportunities to talk to people is great. I’m excited that you write it and people loved it.
upfrontNY: Love is universal, no matter who or where you’re from and it’s such an interesting concept.
Elena:“ Love is like music. It’s one of those languages that you can be anywhere in the world and people know what you’re talking about.”
upfrontNY: What is next for you and “The Love List”?
Elena: I have a spot in Bella NYC coming up. I can’t wait. I have an article coming out with The Style Line about being a writer in Paris and the best spots to check out. I did a national campaign with L’Oreal Canada for LouLou Magazine. It is a spread for their new campaign and will be coming out June 1st.
upfrontNY: What do you want people reading this book to know?
Elena: Love can exist with a list or without a list. Writing your list should make you happy and you should be with someone who makes you happy. Being happy is what life is about.
