Gedina is an accomplished singer/songwriter. Gedina spoke with us about Mermaid-Pop, her upcoming album “Out Of My Shell”, how the ocean inspires her, and more!
upfrontNY: When did you discover your passion for music?
Gedina: I started singing before I was talking… it was all riffs and drool before words came out!
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about mermaid–pop?
Gedina: Mermaid Pop is more than just a genre, it’s a mindset. It brings affirmational lyrics, a powerful siren song, and a mermaid mentality together. Mermaids ebb and flow with one of the most powerful forces of nature: the ocean. They are transformational in nature both breathing below and above water, using song as a way to turn vision into reality.
upfrontNY: How does the ocean inspire you and your music?
Gedina: The ocean has been my greatest teacher. It has taught me respect & humility for myself and others through getting held under by waves and supported by people in the lineup. It has taught me the power of perception, pausing, and shifting to be in rhythm with the world.
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about your single “Messy”?
Gedina: Messy is about seeing each wipeout as a WIN. In surfing, when someone falls we give points to one another on dismounts… and I believe that with everything that is happening in the world today, redefining what it means to be “Messy” is valuable. Every breakdown of a day offers a breakthrough on the other side, and “Messy” is about seeing the beauty in owning what is actually coming up versus putting on a front so we can continue to look good. Time to celebrate the messiness of humanity.
upfrontNY: You have an upcoming album, Out of My Shell. What can your fans expect from the album and what was your favorite part of working on this album?
Gedina: Listeners can expect their butts to be kicked into gear. This album is an invitation for listeners to hear the lyrics, soak them up, own their power, and either continue or begin to tap into their authenticity, joy, vulnerability, and truth! By far, being in the practice of this vision isn’t about me, it’s about the world getting to elevate and come together through music in a way it never has before.
upfrontNY: Do you have a favorite song or lyric from Out of My Shell?
Gedina: The next single on the album is called “Transformer.” I wrote it about my Dad taking himself on and acknowledging that at any age people can embrace a new life, a new vision, a new way of being. He did just that. It has been so inspiring that I wrote a song about it – and as his daughter, I knew it was possible all along for him to elevate life and seeing it was so freakin’ inspiring!
upfrontNY: You launched your own company, 4th Door Records. What has been the best part of launching the company?
Gedina: F&*king Up with certainty. Going at things full steam ahead and making all the mistakes… without them there would be no learning!
upfrontNY: What does this company mean to you and how important was it to you to help other artists?
Gedina: The company represents that anything is possible… it’s a permission slip to dream and go after it, against all odds. In an industry where the gate-keepers shy away because of follower counts and P&L reports, 4th Door Records is saying… it’s not how many people follow you, it’s the quality of relationship you have with the people who do! And if that relationship with fans is inspiring vision, intention, and connection!
upfrontNY: What has been one of your favorite moments in your musical career since moving out to LA?
Gedina: There was this little spot called “Cozy’s” on Ventura in Sherman Oaks, and every Monday night there was a blues jam that I attended. Lord knows, I was the only young, twenty something Swederican (Puerto Rican / Swedish) lady in the spot. One time, Slash walks in and he starts soloing on stage – just smashing the audience to pieces with his talent. So nonchalantly just making love to the guitar and then they look at me to go on stage and play with him! It was definitely a moment to remember that I’ll never forget. This may or may not be searchable on Youtube =)
upfrontNY: What is your dream venue, city, or country to perform one day?
Gedina: Sold out Madison Square Garden, hands down. Followed very closely by the Super Bowl.
