Heather Christie is a singer/songwriter and has a new single out, “Little Bird”. We got to chat with Heather about her music, “Little Bird” and more. Check it out!
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about when you found your passion for music?
Heather Christie: When I was 5 I saw my first Grateful Dead show, and my first musical. I think my love of music was born out of that. When I was 9, I started performing onstage. I was also going to music festivals every summer of my childhood. I fell in love with performing, and with live music. It has just grown and morphed since then.
upfrontNY: What have been some of your musical inspirations?
Heather Christie: Grace Potter, Bonnie Raitt, and Joan Osbourne were some early inspirations. Recently, I have fallen in love with Sia, Alicia Keys and some other underground artists like BANKS and Alina Baraz. All these wonderful women in music have truly inspired me.
upfrontNY: How would you describe your music?
Heather Christie: I call it “electro-soul” meets “alternative pop”.
upfrontNY: You were a part of American Idol. Can you tell us about that experience?
Heather Christie: It was intense!! It mainly showed me what it CAN look like inside a huge machine of the industry, and it also hi lighted what I CAN do to further my own independent career without that machine, and helped me realize how to utilize the tools I DO have, like social media.
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about your song “Little Bird”?
Heather Christie: “Little Bird” is a song for hope. It is a collaboration with my husband, Vir McCoy, and our good friend Evan Fraser of the group Dirtwire. Both are world multi-instrumentalists, and the song features the ‘ngoni’ from Africa, as well as the ‘cumbus’ from Turkey. I’ve really fallen in love with world music. The track was co-produced by a good friend of mine and successful producer, Phutureprimitive. The song carries of message of empowerment to the youth and future generations to keep connection with their wild selves alive. It’s basically a call to love the wilderness and hold on to the free expression that we all feel as children, and can still access.
upfrontNY: How does it feel releasing your music?
Heather Christie: It feels scary, exciting, and disappointing all at the same time. It never goes as you plan, and yet it feels SO GOOD to get the music out there, and give it a life of its own. Releasing the music is really just the beginning of its life in many ways!
upfrontNY: You will be playing in NYC at the end of September. What are you most looking forward to about this?
Heather Christie: I am SO excited to play for a different audience than I’m used to, make new connections, and perform in the city I love most!! I wanted to live in NYC back when I had dreams of Broadway, so to bring my own music there for the first time feels incredibly exciting.
upfrontNY: What is your favorite thing about performing?
Heather Christie: The magic moment that can happen when you let the performance take you over, so that it feels like you are no longer in control, and the muse is speaking through you. The energy of the audience can be so powerful. I am a vessel for creativity, and sometimes this feeling is a huge reminder of that.
upfrontNY: Do you have a dream venue, city, or country to one day perform?
Heather Christie: Berlin, and London! That’s where I am dreaming to perform now!!
upfrontNY: What do you want others to know about you and your music?
Heather Christie: My music is an expression of who I am, and how I process what I feel. It is always changing, and I hope that people will appreciate the beauty of the ever-changing style that my music goes through. It is always an expression of my soul!
