These dynamic brothers are making their debut in the highly comedic MLB documentary Screwball. It captivated audiences at the Toronto Film Festival and will make its theatrical release in April!
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about the film Screwball?
Bryan Screwball is a hilarious documentary about the doping scandal that happened in the baseball scene in the 2000s that features both me and my brother. I play the lead role, “Doctor” Tony Bosch.
Jonathan: Screwball follows an unlicensed physician who illegally provided steroids to athletes and ordinary people. He got busted when New York Yankee A Rod got caught. My character is a Jersey Shore/Mafia type guy who ran a couple of tanning salons where the “doctor” operated from.
upfrontNY: What was it like getting to work with your brother?
Bryan: You know, our characters were never in any major scenes together but knowing he was always there on the days I wasn’t and looking out for me really boosted the experience.
Jonathan: It was great. We only had one day on set together, but still knowing that we would be together in the final product is a great feeling.
upfrontNY: What was the best part of being on set?
Bryan: There were so many good times, like when I got to go on a field trip to buy wigs for my character with the director, Billy Corben. The best of being on set was being in hair and makeup and constantly pranking the crew and even Billy. I hid a fake turd on the set, but when I went back to pick it up, I couldn’t find it. Billy found it and hid it so he could prank me back. He did get me back though…he brought me some fake marshmallow candy from Sweden last week.
Jonathan: Definitely the pranks. We brought fake turds, fake roaches and rats, and a fart app to prank the cast and crew. All in good fun, of course. The director actually got me and the makeup artists back by pranking us with our own fake cockroach.
upfrontNY: How did you two get interested in acting?
Bryan: Well, I am actually really shy, so even when my brother started acting, I didn’t want to. Then one day, my mom took me to one of his sets after school, and I had my first experience with craft services. It was love at first sight. I couldn’t believe you got to eat candy, chips, and cookies all day. When my mom told me craft services was only for working cast and crew, I knew I had to get involved and asked her to sign me up with my brother’s agent.
Jonathan: We used to compete heavily in martial arts tournaments across the nation, but it got really expensive with travel costs and trainers, so my mom said we needed to get jobs. She was joking, but after my first acting gig, it just clicked for me.
upfrontNY: If you could pick any TV show to be on what would you pick?
Bryan: As an actor, I would love to be on The Neighborhood. I think Cedric the Entertainer is hilarious. As a contestant, Ellen’s Game of Games.
Jonathan: I’d love to be the host on a reality comedy like Impractical Jokers. I love comedy. Or a role in DC Universe’s Titans. Something where I could combine my athleticism with my acting.
upfrontNY: You are both 1st degree black belts in Taekwondo, how did you get interested in Martial arts and how old were you when you started?
Bryan: We went to go watch The Karate Kid with Jaden Smith, and we begged my mom to sign us up for lessons as soon as we left the theater. I was 4 years old.
Jonathan: I was 6 when I started. Like Bryan said, it was right after we saw The Karate Kid with Jaden Smith. We were supposed to start baseball that summer, but started karate instead and fell in love with it. Then we started competing and traveling, and it was a lot of fun.
upfrontNY: Bryan, you are an illustrator can you tell us about your illustrations?
Bryan: My grandpa was an artist. When he died, I wanted to continue the legacy of art in our family so I started to take art class seriously in elementary. Over the summer of 4th grade, I started watching youtube videos on how to sketch and draw Chibi figures, and then I started drawing more realistic art. Currently, I’m taking Art 1 in middle school, and I hope I can take Art 2 with the high schoolers next year.
upfrontNY: Jonathan, you are a sound mixer/composer how did you get into that and what kind of music do you like to work with?
Jonathan: A couple summers ago, one of my best friends and I came home from parkour camp, too tired to do anything, so we just started messing around on SoundCloud. I always liked to write lyrics, but then I got a microphone for Christmas a couple years ago, and I continued to upgrade from using Garage Band to Logic Pro X. I’ve just been writing and messing with every style ever since, but my favorite style is hip hop and EDM. Over winter break last year, our friend TJ Wright, from The Hate You Give, and I put out a song called Rockin the World. Our moms love it.
upfrontNY: When you grow up do you think you will still be acting or what do you think you might be doing?
Bryan: Yes, I see myself continuing to act as I grow up. I am in my first theater production right now with Miami New Drama called Confessions of a Cocaine Cowboy co-written by Billy Corben, the director from Screwball. I am learning a different side of acting and am amazed.
Jonathan: For a long time, I wanted to be a neurosurgeon and viewed acting as a fun way to pay for college. I love acting, but I hope I get to pursue music and music production as I get older. I hope acting opens opportunities for me in that area as well.
