upfrontNY: What do you love most about acting?
Jordyn Raya James: What I love about acting is that you can play a different person. I love who I am and wouldn’t change a thing, but it is really fun to be imaginative with the different characters and scenarios.
upfrontNY: You play Ami on the Netflix Family Comedy “Family Reunion”. Can you tell us about Ami and what you enjoy most about playing her?
Jordyn Raya James: Ami is an old soul, and named after M’Dear (Loretta Devine), loves her family, and really looks up to her brothers and sister. Ami has a kind attitude, but questions all of her family members… Oh, and Ami love’s ice cream, just like me! – What I enjoy the most of playing Ami, is that the character is similar to myself; so that makes somethings easier at times
upfrontNY: What has it been like working with Tia Mowry-Hardrict and Loretta Devine and have you gotten any great advice on set?
Jordyn Raya James: It is really fun working with them both. They are SUPER nice, and they always give hugs. When we are in hair and make up, I love talking with them. – They have given me great pointers, especially with the multi-camera, showing me how to angle my body or specific places to stand.
upfrontNY: What is your favorite part about filming?
Jordyn Raya James: When we have live studio audiences, because all of the fans get to see us in person; and I really love that I get to see people in person enjoying the show.
upfrontNY: How do you get ready for a day of filming and who do you practice your lines with?
Jordyn Raya James: I have to study and learn my scripts. I study my scripts at home, on set. We rehearse and rehearse! The hard part is when we receive a different episodes script, while we are rehearsing a separate one. SO I have two scripts in my head! – I practice my lines with my parents, on set during rehearsals, and a dialogue coach.
upfrontNY: How did it feel to find out the series has been picked up for a second season?
Jordyn Raya James: I was super excited! I love working on the show, it is so much fun! Mostly I am excited to see all of the other cast members, because I feel like they are family to me; and I absolutely love working with all of them.
upfrontNY: What is your dream role and who would you like to work with one day?
Jordyn Raya James: What I have always wanted to do, is play a movie role where my character is magical or fantasy, like being a mermaid, or having magic powers and flying on a unicorn; or a flying-random-unicorn-person. – I WOULD LOVE to work with Billie Eilish. I love her songs, and she is really great. But if Billie says no, then I would say Arianna Grande. Since they are singers, maybe they could do a guest spot.
upfrontNY: What is next for you in 2020?
Jordyn Raya James: Family Reunion Season 2! And hoping after we film the season I can get a YouTube channel going.
