Last night we had the chance to attend Lee DeWyze’s album release party. The event took place at the intimate and candlelit venue, The Cutting Room. This was a great evening and celebration for Oil and Water.
The evening started with Leslie Dinicola. During her set she did a powerful rendition of Demi Lovato’s “Skyscraper” and sang a beautiful song she wrote with Lee called “Black&White” which will be released in the next few months! Leslie ended her set with her song “Keep Your Light.”
Wakey Wakey took the stage next. Not only is he a great performer, but engaging with the crowd and filled with humor! Throughout his performance he discussed being a fan of Harry Connick Jr. and what he imagined one of those concerts
would be like, dark, filled with candelight. Then he said to the crowd, “Thank You for Making Me feel like Harry Connick Jr.” Songs he sang included “War Sweater,” Hipster Lullaby, and “Dance So Good” from the show One Tree Hill. He ended his set with “Light Outside.” We loved that he referenced the fact of how McDonald’s hashbrowns all say “Wakey Wakey.”
From the moment Lee stepped on stage, he had the crowd’s attention. One of the first songs he sang was“Stay Away” from his album Frames. During his performance he performed the song “Blackbird Song” which had been written for the show, The Walking Dead. The first song he played off Oil and Water was “Learn To Fall,” a song about experiences we all go through when we think what the hell am I doing, he said it really speaks to him.
From the new album, he also performed “Again” and “West.” Even though he writes most of his songs in his backyard, “West,” was written while driving through the country. Lee also shared some covers with the crowd, singing Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” and Death Cab For Cutie’s “I’ll Follow You Into The Dark.” His final song of the evening was “Stone.” Lee told the crowd that on a deep level, this song means the most to him. Lee if a beautiful story-teller who wants to be remembered not only for his American Idol days but his passion, songwriting.
This was a great evening. Leslie, Wakey Wakey, and Lee DeWyze were truly thankful to the fans and The Cutting Room. Lee even had the crowd raise their glasses to cheers the venue. Following the concert, the three performers all took time to meet and talk to each fan.

Don’t you love it when great musicians are good people too? Lee’s music stands alone, but at the shows I’ve been to, he always tries to make each fan feel special. I’m happy for all the great reviews coming his way; Oil & Water is a musical masterpiece 🙂
