You’ve heard Lucie Pohl’s voice on video games like Overwatch, World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth as well as various characters on Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. We caught up with her about all that and much more!
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about being the voice of Mercy in Overwatch? How has it changed your life?
Lucie Pohl: I love being the voice of Mercy! She is such an aspirational and inspirational female character, so I am very proud that I get to bring her to life. Mercy has so much dimension to her, like all women do. She is feminine, strong, empathetic, educated, tough, sassy, cool, pragmatic and yet soft. Voicing Mercy has changed my life in so many ways. The most important being the amount of people I get to connect with and meet. Every person has a story. Through Mercy, I have met so many amazing people all over the world, who have shared their stories with me – that has truly been a life changing experience.
upfrontNY: You will be at NY Comic Con. What are you most excited to see and do there?
Lucie Pohl: I won’t get to do much besides meeting fans, which I love! I am doing autograph signings and a panel. I’m also excited to see my girls Carolina, Jen and Anjali and may be pranking one or two of them…If I get time to wonder around, I might pick up a copy of John Leguizamo’s Ghetto Klown comic.
upfrontNY: Before voicing characters on huge video games were you a gamer yourself?
Lucie Pohl: Umm…I like Tetris…does that count?
upfrontNY: Do fans often ask you to say a popular phrase or something from game?
Lucie Pohl: Yes fans ask me to give them a Heroes Never Die on a pretty regular basis and I love doing it. My favorite is when little kids come to the table and don’t quiet believe I’m Mercy until they hear me do the voice lines. Then they just stand there completely frozen.
upfrontNY: Entertainment runs in your family, did you always know you wanted to be an entertainer?
Lucie Pohl: I have always wanted to be an entertainer. My mother tells me that when I was 3 years old, I told her I’d either want to be an actor or someone who wakes people up by throwing wet wash cloths at their faces. I think I did the world a favor by becoming an actor.
upfrontNY: You have written and created solo comedies that have toured internationally. Do you see different reactions to your comedy depending on where you are performing?
Lucie Pohl: People in the UK are harder to make laugh than anywhere else. They’re very skeptical especially of Americans. Germans laugh at the more darker stuff than Americans. Romanians have a great sense of humor!
upfrontNY: Can you tell us a bit about your solo comedies?
Lucie Pohl: I write mostly about experiences I have had in my life or characters I have met. My solo shows Hi, Hitler and Apohlcalypse Now! are autobiographical comedies that combine storytelling, stand up and character comedy. My show Cry Me A Liver is a character comedy in which I play 10 different completely nutty characters.
upfrontNY: Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz was your babysitter, what was that like?
Lucie Pohl: It was awesome – he didn’t drop me once. Whenever I see a movie with Christoph in it and hear his voice, I immediately feel 3 years old.
