Miles Brown danced into our hearts as Baby Boogaloo and is now making us laugh as ‘Jack Johnson’ on ABC’s “Black-ish”. He is telling us more about the show and more about his dance moves!
upfrontNY: You play Jack Johnson on ABC’s Black-ish; can you tell us a little about the show and your character’s place in the family?
Miles Brown: It’s a really cool experience because the whole show feels like it’s just a huge family and we get to go everywhere with each other that’s why we have really good chemistry on and off camera.
upfrontNY: You play a twin on the show, since you two are so close on the show are you and Marsai Martin particularly close in real life?
Miles Brown: We have a really good chemistry together. Marsai is really fun to be around and we really feel like brother and sister. We’ve gone everywhere like Washington DC, Disney Cruise, New York and Hawaii together, we’ve even slept over at each other’s houses!
upfrontNY: On the show there will be a new baby; how will that change the family dynamic and affect your character?
Miles Brown: I think it’s pretty weird. I don’t know how it’s going to be yet, but I have a feeling that Jack and the other Johnson kids aren’t going to be that happy since they all want to be the center of attention. Also, I think Jack likes being the baby of the family.
upfrontNY: The Johnsons are a big crazy family; do you have a big crazy family in real life?
Miles Brown: I actually do have a big, crazy family, but a lot of them live out of state. It’s nice when we all get together for our annual family reunion or for holidays like Thanksgiving. It’s really crazy to be around them! I also consider my TV family as part of my family; they’re just as awesome!
upfrontNY: Your dad is a rapper; do you two ever perform together?
Miles Brown: Of course I get to perform with my dad! He goes by WildChild of the Lootpack. It’s really fun because I get to travel all over with him and watch all his different shows. I’m actually working on my first rap album with my dad’s help, so it’s really cool to see what he does, and I’m now hopefully I can do the same.
upfrontNY: The cast was nominated for an Emmy and won an NAACP award; how did you guys celebrate?
Miles Brown: I celebrated our Emmy nomination at an Emmy after-party with the cast. Even though we didn’t win, we still celebrated with the other network shows. For the NAACP awards, it was really cool because I got to celebrate with my real family and eat at my favorite restaurant!
upfrontNY: You are baby boogaloo, you are party time, where do these nicknames come from? And where did you learn to dance so well?
Miles Brown: My dad had a bunch of music and videos from all around the world while I was growing up. He used to show me a clips from Soul Train, YouTube dancers , and Michael Jackson, and those inspired me. I still dance all the time. After my first performance with my dad, my dad mentioned “well you need a nickname.” So we began thinking until we found the perfect one: Baby Boogaloo, which was inspired by my favorite dance group, The Electric Boogaloo’s.
upfrontNY: You are known for being an actor and a dancer, do you have any hidden talents we didn’t know about you?
Miles Brown: I play basketball, and hope to be in the NBA some day. I also rap, and have most recently started on my first rap album.
upfrontNY: What is your favorite popular dance move?
Miles Brown: Even though I like older styles like popping and locking and b-boying, my favorite popular dance move right now is the Dab!
