Check out our interview with singer/songwriter Montana Modderman. We chat about her single “Mad About You”, her forthcoming EP, and more.
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about how you got involved in music and when you knew this was something you wanted to pursue?
Montana Modderman: I fell in love with country music at a young age. I always loved to sing. I wrote my first song when I was ten or eleven and started playing guitar at thirteen. It wasn’t long after I started writing regularly that I knew it was something I wanted to pursue.
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about your new single “Mad About You”?
Montana Modderman: “Mad About You” is a groovy love song. I wrote it about that crazy kind of love. The kind that isn’t necessarily practical, but always worth it.
upfrontNY: This is the first single of your forthcoming EP. What is the best part of being able to share this song ?
Montana Modderman: For me, the best part is just seeing people respond to the song. I was actually nervous to release this one because it’s an uptempo love song and I tend to gravitate towards writing more mid-tempo melancholy kind of songs. However, I knew it was important to show this side of me too. I’m so happy people are liking the song.
upfrontNY: People can now pre-order the EP. How does it make you feel to have people supporting your dreams and your music?
Montana Modderman: You know that means everything. I know that is such a cliche answer but it really is the truth. When you put out music you never know how the audience will respond or if there will even be an audience. I just feel very lucky to have people interested in my music.
upfrontNY: What is the most important quality for someone to have for you to be “mad” over them?
Montana Modderman: Honesty. That’s a big thing for me.
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about your forthcoming EP and what you are most excited about for its release?
Montana Modderman: These three songs on “For The Record” really tell the story of loving, losing but not letting the loss break you or make you resent what you once loved. A lot of thought went into the tracklist and what I wanted to convey. I can’t wait for people to be able to listen to it from top to bottom.
upfrontNY: Who are your musical inspirations?
Montana Modderman: Taylor Swift and Shania Twain.
upfrontNY: What has been one of your favorite experiences performing?
Montana Modderman: You know, I really love playing rounds in Nashville. It has been so fun getting to share new songs and playing with some of my co-writers and friends.
upfrontNY: Do you have a dream venue, city, or country you want to perform?
Montana Modderman: For me, it would be so cool to be able to play the Van Andel Area one day. I was born in Grand Rapids. Michigan is still very much home for me so it would be special.
upfrontNY: What do you want others to know about you and your music?
Montana Modderman: Just that I’m always going to try to be as honest and real as I can. I have always appreciated when songwriters pour their hearts into a song. That vulnerability is so beautiful. So I’m always going to try to give that.
