Recently we got to interview Adrian Daniel. Adrian is from Brooklyn and his music is described as a blend of soul, alternative and hip-hop.
upfrontNY: How did you get your start with music?
Adrian Daniel: I started taking music seriously after I finished high school, before that it was something I did for fun. My godfather and mother really opened my ears to so much music, and when I heard the BAD album by Michael Jackson I would literally sit there and mimic his voice as much as I could. When I heard “Dark side of the moon” by Pink Floyd nothing was ever the same for me. I knew I had to make music.
upfrontNY: Who were / are your musical inspirations?
Adrian Daniel: There are so many, but Michael, Prince, Stevie and Kanye, and Queen are my top tier. If I were to name all of my inspirations we would be here all day.
upfrontNY: Do you have a favorite quote or song lyric?
Adrian Daniel: This is a great question by the way. There are so many that are my favorites but what comes to mind now is, “If I can’t help somebody, With a word or song. If I can’t show somebody, They are travelin’ wrong. But I know I ain’t no prophet, An’ I ain’t no prophet’s son. I’m just a long time a-comin’ An’ I’ll be a long time gone” – Bob Dylan
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about your LP, Disillusions that will be released this year?
Adrian Daniel: Making the project was a labor of love. It’s a story I have been trying to tell since I first started making music and this is the final chapter of that story. I think it veritably defines me as an artist for where I am now, which was my aim. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.
upfrontNY: What do you want others to know and feel from your music?
Adrian Daniel: I really just want people to walk alway with hearing a great story while they run through a range of emotions hearing it. It’s all about the stories for me and telling a beautiful one is my goal.
upfrontNY: Do you have a favorite spot that you go to write?
Adrian Daniel: My room, I always run back to my room to write songs, it’s my most comfortable place. If I write other places, people would try to tell me how to write my songs and I never finish those songs. Those songs will never be heard.
upfrontNY: What is the best part of performing in NYC?
Adrian Daniel: NYC is either going to really love you or really not. At my shows the crowd talks back to me and tells me to do songs again and curses at me if I don’t and I love all of it. NYC shows me so much love especially Brooklyn and I put that on my back and run with it.
