The film, “Don’t Think Twice” was recently screened as part of the NY Film Critics Spring Series.
The film was written and directed by Mike Birbiglia who also stars in the film. He made his directorial debut in 2012 with Sleepwalk With Me. He is also an actor who has appeared in The Fault in Our Stars, Trainwreck, and Orange is the New Black.
“Don’t Think Twice” stars Mike Birbiglia, Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher, and Chris Gethard who perform together as the improv group, The Commune. The film follows the group as they perform while trying to get their big break. When one member of the group becomes successful and joins “Weekend Live”, the rest of the group hopes and waits for their turn for success.
Not only was it very funny, but it also pulled on the heartstrings. There are several scenes that show the true struggle of wanting something for so long and hoping that your time will come. It also shows the characters having to deal with the ups and downs that life brings you and the reality that you might not become the big success that you had always imagined you would be.
The cast had great chemistry and it was a very enjoyable film. Following the screening, Peter Travers hosted a Q&A with Mike Birbiglia and Ira Glass. Ira Glass is a producer on the film. He is also the host and producer of “This American Life”. They discussed the film and took questions from the audience.
Mike discussed how he brought in an improv trainer before filming. Even though many members of the cast had previous improve experience, Gillian and Kate did not have prior improv training.
Gillian was on Mike’s radar after being recommended by his friend, Lena Dunham after she had read the script. Lena also made a cameo in the film.
Mike is currently on tour screening his film and doing improv workshops.
The film will be released in select theaters July 22nd!
