upfrontNY: Your brand new single, “What You Need” has been released! What has the process of recording and getting ready to premiere it been like?
RJ Word: It’s been a lot of work. But it’s rewarding. Recording the song is the fun and easy part. Most of the time has been spend on getting the video done.
upfrontNY: How would you describe your sound as a musician?
RJ Word: Funk-pop with some R&B influence, dynamic arrangements and heavy hitting drums.
upfrontNY: What are your musical influences?
RJ Word: Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and Bruno Mars to name a few.
upfrontNY: Will you be releasing more singles or an album?
RJ Word: Just more singles for now.
upfrontNY: Growing up, did you always know you wanted to purse music as a career?
RJ Word: I’ve always known I wanted to sing. Well, between that and acting. But making a career out of it was a decision made closer to 14.
upfrontNY: What has been the biggest challenge pursuing a career in music so far?
RJ Word: Constantly evolving and finding new ways to stand out from the crowd.
upfrontNY: How has your music evolved since releasing “Here Today” in 2016?
RJ Word: The video for ‘Here Today came’ out in 2016. I actually dropped the song back in 2015. I think the music has matured just like I have. I wrote that song when I was 17, I’m almost 21 now. It reflects who I was then. The new records shows who I am now.
upfrontNY: You have over a million followers on social media and over a million views of your songs on YouTube, what has it been like building that fan base and following?
RJ Word: I just started posting my music and was really excited people liked it. People started commenting, so I responded. Then they kept coming back for more and I’m happy to give it to them.
upfrontNY: What are your hobbies outside of music?
RJ Word: Honestly, I’m always working. But I like to hike, take photos and see films. I’ve also been sculpting lately, when I have the time.
upfrontNY: If you can tour with any artist, who would you choose?
RJ Word: Even though it’d suck to be compared to him because he’s so good live, Bruno
