Sloane Siegel is a talented actor who can currently be seen playing Dwight in “Dwight in Shining Armor”. We got to chat with Sloane about what fans can expect from the upcoming season, “Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street”, and more!
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about “Dwight in Shining Armor?”
Sloane Siegel: Dwight in Shining Armor is a half-hour family comedy about a modern day kid (Dwight) who falls into a buried castle and lands lip to lip with a gothic warrior princess and breaks her sleeping spell to become her champion. When he wakes her up however, he also wakes up her entire buried medieval world of witches, bandits, dragons, fairies, and countless other magical and medieval beings. It’s a show about medieval times clashing with modern day, seeing them adapt to the present, and seeing Dwight navigate dangers from the past to aid the princess as her spellbound and fated champion. Though, most of the time she can take care of herself in battle, Dwight offers more modern, peaceful, and diplomatic means of defeating enemies.
upfrontNY: Can you tell us about your character Dwight, and what you have enjoyed most about playing him?
Sloane Siegel: Dwight is a model citizen. He’s just a normal guy always helping people before he helps himself. He volunteers at pet shelters, the senior center, and takes charge on every school event possible. He’s always on a schedule and never does anything less than his best. When Gretta and Baldric come into his life, he’s thrown very off-balance. He has to juggle his already very busy life where many people count on him, with his duty as Gretta’s champion. My favorite part about playing him is being the audiences point of view for all of the magical and medieval things. Sure, I don’t get to do any cool sword fights or cast any spells, but I get to experience so many incredible things for the first time as the character and really play with and explore the feelings and ideas that come with those discoveries. Like, getting caught up in a tavern brawl or being chased by a horde of Orcs.
upfrontNY: Have you had a favorite moment while being on set?
Sloane Siegel: I have had way too many amazing moments on set to pick just one. But, one that comes to mind from the recent episodes we filmed is from the first time we filmed in our new set the Swine and Slosh Tavern. Without revealing anything, we had thirty or so stunt men and women engage in a half-improvised brawl. Meanwhile, people were bombarding me with vegetables and another actor was strapped to a spinning wheel. It was absolute chaos and so much fun to film. That scene alone represents the hectic nature of our set and how every day there is a completely new, absurd challenge that we take on to create such a fun show for you all to enjoy.
upfrontNY: What can fans expect from season 3?
Sloane Siegel: People can expect, many charming new characters as well as the return of beloved characters from previous episodes. A few new recurring sets and a ton of animals. But, season 3 is mainly centered around Sir Aldred and the rise of the Tovanars and how our heroes deal with the world-threatening danger they pose.
upfrontNY: Can you tell us what was the best part of playing Gortimer in “Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street?”
Sloane Siegel: The best thing about being Gortimer is that it was my first time being a series regular. I not only had a steady job but I got to develop a character continually over a long period of time and that taught me a lot about acting. I also grew up with Gortimer, so many of the life lessons in the show contributed to my own personal growth. It was just an all-around amazing set that I made life-long friends from and gained such vital experience from for every role I’ve taken on since.
upfrontNY: You have won several awards. What has this meant to you to have your work recognized?
Sloane Siegel: It may sound a bit cliché, but it really means the world to me to be recognized for my work. Acting is my entire life and I’ve put literal blood, sweat, and tears into it. To be given award for something I’m very passionate about and work very hard for, reassures me that I’m doing the right thing and doing it to the best of my ability. I’m just glad to know that my work has brought people joy and understanding.
upfrontNY: You have had roles on several top shows. What show do you hope to work on one day?
Sloane Siegel: My mom raised me on Star Trek: Next Generation. I’m a super nerd for anything sci-fi, so I’d love to be a part of any Star Trek series now or in the future. That, or anything Noah Hawley does.
upfrontNY: Aside from acting you are also a writer. Can you tell us about that and when you found your interest in writing?
Sloane Siegel: When I was in Kindergarten, we got this assignment to make a little five-page picture book with crayons and I remember sitting in front of the paper. I remember my head spinning with so many ideas and the power I had to create my own world to share with everyone around me. Even though I was just a little kid, in that moment I knew I loved to write stories. I wrote this ridiculous story about a Narwhal getting trapped in ice and then a snowy owl flew by him and wanted to help. So, he got hundreds of other owls to lift the ice. Silly, right? But, that didn’t matter to me because I realized that in the worlds I created I could be as silly as I like. Over the years that changed and evolved until I wrote my first short story for a high school project. The thrill and the rush of creating a world once again, but this time I kept writing short stories for myself, until I started a book. I started finding my writing niche of thriller, horror, and fantasy. Hopefully that book will release this year.
upfrontNY: We saw on your Instagram page that you have an adorable dog. Can you tell us about how adopting a pet has changed your life?
Sloane Siegel: Adopting a pet is like adding a family member. They become a permanent positive character in your life that you can never imagine your life without. I love all animals, but dogs man… I love dogs so much. Like what did we ever do to deserve dogs? They give so much unconditional love. I grew up on a rescue farm where we had six dogs all bigger than me, so I’ve had pets since I was born. When you’re little, getting a dog teaches you so much responsibility that I recommended for any person or home. But, I think adopting a pet can only bring joy into your life. So please, I urge you: If you don’t have a pet, please adopt. It will only bring happiness and good energy to your life. Or if you already have a pet, adopt another one. More the merrier.
upfrontNY: When you are not working what do you enjoy doing?
Sloane Siegel: I love writing as we already established. I hang out with my friends every chance I get, whether it’s planning a road trip or grabbing Boba late at night to converse about existence. I love hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, all that outdoorsy stuff. I’m an avid gamer and stargazer. And this is starting to sound like a dating profile isn’t it? Oh well, I do enjoy long walks on the beach.
upfrontNY: What goals for the new year?
Sloane Siegel: My goals for the new year are to publish my first novel and travel somewhere I’ve never been to before. And of course unlock the secrets of the universe.
