Recently I had the chance to sit down and chat with the girls of the band Spinn.
Spinn is an Alternative Country band from NJ. The band is composed of Megan Battaglia and twin sisters, Stephanie and Cheryl Lynn Spinner. These Jersey girls have a passion for country music, Miranda Lambert, and getting the party started with a little bit of Tequila. Spinn puts their heart and soul into their music and lyrics, from their heartbroken song, “So Hurtful” to their fun, catchy, and upbeat song, “City Country.” These girls know how to put the sass in those cowboy boots, combining their Jersey side with their love of country music. They are frequently out on the scene playing several venues and know how to start a crowd. Not only singing their own songs, but covering several genres of music including songs from, Bonnie Raitt, Beyonce, Tom Petty, Miranda Lambert, Gnarls Barkley, and several others. This is going to be a big year for these girls!
upfrontNY:How long has Spinn been together?
Spinn: We started in college and we have been a band for 6 years.
upfrontNY: How was Spinn formed?
Spinn: Me (Stephanie) and Cher are twins. We always wanted to be in a band and then we met Meg. She was doing her own thing and we started writing for her and her voice, then we decided harmony was more fun and we decided we would sing together.
upfrontNY: How would you describe your sound?
Spinn: Alternative country – With our recent release “City Country” it’s a statement, its a genre in itself, a state of mind – that’s where city country came from.
upfrontNY: What does “City Country” mean to you?
Spinn: We grew up in Jersey and we love country music. It went away from this area for a really long time and it’s finally coming back. It speaks to our soul, it’s partying, the most romantic and heartbreaking, the most passionate music you can hear.
upfrontNY: Country has become so huge in the area and everyone seems so into it right now.
Spinn: Country concerts are more fun. Everybody is hanging out in the parking lot and hanging out with each other. It’s an everybody together thing, and we wanted to be a part of that.
upfrontNY: You recently had your ep release party, what does it feel like having everybody supporting you and also having it on iTunes?
Spinn: It has made it so much easier for people to look it up on iTunes. It is not our first song on iTunes but it has been doing the best. “City Country” is catchy and people ask what is it , I want to know what it is.
upfrontNY: Summer is around the corner. If you had the opportunity to tour with any band this summer who would it be?
Spinn: Miranda- we think she is our soul sister
upfrontNY: Do you feel like you connect with her the most out of country musicians?
Spinn: Absolutely!
upfrontNY: What is it about her that you connect with?
Spinn: It’s everything! She is so honest and real, she is not afraid to be vulnerable but she is not afraid to be tough and rugged.
upfrontNY: What’s been the best place you have performed, do you like small places, bigger places, or depends on the energy?
Spinn: It is completely the energy. Our absolute favorite place to play right now is Hill Country Brooklyn or Manhattan. Brooklyn especially, people just really want to listen to music and it’s hard to find country music. There’s also BBQ and tequila!
upfrontNY: We are in March and we have a lot of 2015 left, do you have any big goals that you want to hit before the end of the year?
Spinn: In May we are planning to do a radio promotion nationwide . We have done college and internet radio but this is our first national campaign where the potential for people to hear us is so huge!
upfrontNY:Do you have one song or album that made you realize this is it, this is where I want my life to go?
Spinn: There are a few songs we all really connect with. One of the songs off our last album, “So Hurtful” is something we have all been through and it healed us through things we were going through. We were on stage and you could tell we were singing from our hearts.. That song is where it turned for us. We are going to be country because that’s where our heart is.
upfrontNY: What do you want people to know about your music or feel from your songs?
Spinn: We are hoping people connect with us the way we connect with all other country artists, rock artists, and pop. If you have something to say, which we have so much to say. We hope that they feel that and some of the stuff we have gone through they have gone through, maybe help people and turn people’s day around. We bonded over this and we all feel the music. We went to a concert and saw Jessica Harp and one of her songs had us crying. The passion hits you in the stomach and pulls at your heart strings. Music is so universal.
upfrontNY: Thank you for sitting down to chat and it sounds like you have a big year coming up!
Spinn: Thank you! Thank you!
