Recently we got to interview singer-songwriter Valerie Broussard. Valerie is currently working on her debut album and recently released her new single, “A Little Wicked,” which has been featured in the FOX tv show Lucifer.
Valerie learned to play clarinet in the 4th grade and began singing in school plays. She got serious about music when she attended college in Europe. While in Europe, she was discovered by an Opera director at school which led to an Opera career. Classical music had always been a big part of her life and she liked being classically trained.
After traveling throughout Europe performing in Operas, she moved back to the United States and transitioned into pop music. Valerie currently travels between Philly, NYC, Nashville and LA working as a songwriter. “It is such a gift. It is wonderful to get up every morning and know you are getting paid to do what you love. My day job is as a songwriter. It is unreal. I still can’t believe it is something that happened to me.”
We asked Valerie if her music inspiration varies depending on where she is “Asbolutely. It is the people that you meet, the things that people said to you at dinner, the vibe of the place you are staying.” While staying in an Air B&B in London, she was kept awake at night by a knocking sound on the wall. She went into the studio the next day and talked about her experience. “Somebody joked it was like the Tell-Tale Heart the Edgar Allan Poe poem. We ended up writing a song about that, called “Tell-Tale Heart.”
Valerie’s new single is called A Little Wicked. “I was at jury duty and someone kept calling me honey. That’s when I came up with that first line. The expanded vision of the same came from watching the trailer for the new Macbeth with Marion Cotillard. I was talking to my producer, and I love Shakespeare. I said I would like to write something about this lady Macbeth concept, this idea of the Machiavellian woman. Sometimes you have to do whatever it takes to seize power as a lady, especially in history. We ran with that.” The song was recently featured in the FOX show, Lucifer. “It was really cool, especially because Lucifer is a great fit for the song. It is a show about the devil and the song is called “A Little Wicked”. We have had a lot of great messages and tweets and people being really supportive of the song. It was really fun to see someone take your music and put it into something visual.”
There are so many shows that Valerie would like to hear her songs in, including Arrow. An episode of Arrow provided inspiration for a song she wrote and recorded with enl1te.
Valerie is really looking forward to this year. She will be performing an acoustic performance in London, getting ready for her CMW showcase in Toronto in May. She has been working on some exciting projects that she looks forward to sharing in the near future!
