On Sunday, September 20th Women’s Health magazine will be kicking off its 2015 RUN10 FEED10 in NYC with the Feed Foundation, an organization founded by Lauren Bush Lauren. This race series has a mission to help those in hunger. By running this 10K, participants will feed 10 people. This is now the fourth year for the series and the goal is to provide 5 million meals.
This race series will be taking place at Pier 84 at Hudson River Park and will
run down the West Side Highway! There will be plenty of pre and post actives, including yoga with a special guest trainer, freebies, giveaways, and special guests including special guest host, ABC’s Good Morning America Chief Meteorologist Ginger Zee!
We recently had the chance to ask Women’s Health VP/Publisher Laura Frerer-Schmidt who created RUN10 FEED10, some questions about the series and here is what she had to say :
How was the RUN10 FEED10 event series started?
When I started as Publisher of Women’s Health magazine 4 years ago, I wanted to start an event that combined fitness and philanthropy. I’m a big supporter of Lauren Bush Lauren and the FEED Foundation so reached out to see if they would be interested in partnering with us. From that, RUN10 FEED10 was born and to date we have raised over 3.75 million meals for the hungry in the United States.
What is the best part of kicking off the RUN10 FEED 10 in New York City?
The energy from everyone who attends this event—there is nothing like it. New York City is one of the best places to reach thousands of people who want to get out and support this initiative. We shut down the West Side Highway, host an amazing wellness festival with great giveaways from our sponsors, a yoga stretch and even a live concert!
How can runners prepare for the race?
We host training runs across the country, offer a free training app, provide online training guides, and inspiration from celebrity runners (GMA’s Ginger Zee is walk/running and blogging)! You can find all of this information and more at RUN10FEED10.com and you can get even more tips at WomensHealthMag.com.
For those not planning on running the 10K, but wanting to be involved, are there other ways they can be a part of this event?
Yes of course! Runners and consumers can fundraise to further support their community. It takes only 10 friends donating $10 each to feed a family of four with a month’s worth of meals. Participants can join a fundraising team or create their own and FEED will make sure the funds are distributed to each community. Anyone can make a donation by visiting the RUN10 FEED10 Crowdrise site and clicking on the red box that says “DONATE” on the right side of the page. Every dollar amount counts!
What is your vision for the future of the RUN10 FEED10 event series?
To expand. We’d like to take this movement across the globe: Bettering yourself and your community in one fell swoop is a very modern, very powerful concept. Add the social element, and it’s everything Millenials are looking for: Run a 10k, feed 10 hungry people in your hometown. …in New York City, in Boise, in any city in this nation. And hopefully soon, across the world.
